Object

PK24 seems almost unwilling to become a chair. Two arcs of wicker and steel meet without being fixed together, allowing the body to settle somewhere between them. The seat rests freely on the frame, held in place by gravity alone. Kjærholm called it his Hammock Chair.

Designed in 1965, its long curve carries an unexpected memory of the Rococo chaise longue, reduced until almost nothing remains but structure, material and the position of a body at rest. Cold steel sits beneath handwoven wicker. One is exact, the other imperfect. Together they create something remarkably quiet, a place to stretch out, disappear for an afternoon and let gravity do the rest.

Designer

Poul Kjærholm (1929–1980) began as a cabinetmaker, but his imagination quickly moved beyond the traditional language of wood. At the Danish School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen, he became fascinated by materials that Scandinavian furniture had largely left to industry, particularly steel.

He treated it with the sensitivity another designer might reserve for timber, interested in the way a surface reflected light, how two elements touched and how little material was actually necessary. His furniture became increasingly precise, but never cold. Steel met leather, canvas, marble and wicker, allowing industrial structure and natural imperfection to exist quietly beside one another.

Manufacturer

Fritz Hansen began in Copenhagen in 1872 and grew from a cabinetmaking workshop into one of the defining manufacturers of Danish modern furniture. Across generations, collaborations with designers such as Arne Jacobsen helped turn experimental ideas into objects that travelled far beyond Denmark.

In the 1980s, Fritz Hansen acquired the rights to Poul Kjærholm's collection. His restrained world of steel, leather, wicker and stone became part of a company already deeply connected to the history of Danish modernism, allowing designs such as PK24 to continue beyond the lifetime of their creator.

Condition

The brushed stainless-steel frame remains beautifully preserved in excellent vintage condition. The woven wicker seat retains its natural character and shows a light, even patina developed through age and previous use. As with any authentic vintage piece, subtle traces of time may be present, adding to the history and individual character of the chaise longue.
