Object

These chairs are built around a quiet contrast. Dark rosewood creates a slender, disciplined structure, while soft bouclé sits within it, bringing texture and warmth to the precise geometry of the frame. Nothing is exaggerated. The wood, fabric and proportions are allowed to do almost all the work.

There is something particularly intimate about Danish dining furniture from this period. It was designed around the table, around conversation and around the repetition of everyday rituals. Seen together as a set of six, the chairs become more than individual objects. Rosewood frames repeat around the room, pale seats interrupt the darker structure, and the dining table becomes a small piece of architecture for people to gather around.

Designer

Poul H. Poulsen worked within the Danish furniture tradition at a moment when Scandinavian design was becoming an international language. His furniture followed the principles that defined much of the period: clear construction, carefully resolved proportions and a belief that natural materials needed little decoration.

Rather than relying on dramatic gestures, Poulsen allowed craftsmanship and material to shape the character of his furniture. Wood remained visible, structures stayed legible and comfort was integrated quietly into the form. The result belongs to the more understated side of Danish modernism, furniture designed to become part of everyday life rather than compete with it.

Manufacturer

Gangsø Møbler emerged in Denmark during the postwar decades, producing furniture rooted in the country's woodworking tradition while responding to a rapidly changing international market. Rosewood and teak became recurring materials, bringing warmth and depth to the clean forms associated with Scandinavian modernism.

Its furniture travelled far beyond Denmark, carrying with it an idea of domestic life built around natural materials, practical forms and enduring craftsmanship. These dining chairs capture that world particularly well: restrained enough to disappear into a room, yet rich enough in material and detail to reward a closer look.

Condition

The rosewood frames are beautifully preserved, revealing their rich reddish-brown tone and distinctive natural grain. The seating has been freshly upholstered in soft off-white bouclé. All six chairs are preserved in excellent vintage condition. As with any authentic vintage pieces, subtle traces of age and previous use may be present, adding to their history and individual character.
