Object

The GE-673 is Hans J. Wegner's interpretation of the rocking chair stripped back to structure, movement and material.

The design is immediately recognisable by its tall sculptural frame and distinctive keyhole-shaped opening. Rather than treating the rocker as a traditional upholstered object, Wegner exposes its construction completely. Slender wooden members define the architecture, while a suspended leather surface provides the softness required by the body.

There is an unusual tension between the chair's visual lightness and its physical presence. The elongated back gives it an almost graphic silhouette, while the sweeping runners transform the structure into one continuous gesture. Cognac leather introduces warmth against the pale beech and develops the kind of natural patina that makes the material increasingly individual with age.

Like much of Wegner's best furniture, the GE-673 appears simple only after an enormous amount of thought. Joinery, proportion, ergonomics and material are resolved into a chair where nothing feels accidental.

It is both an exceptionally functional rocker and one of Wegner's more distinctive sculptural experiments.

Designer

Hans J. Wegner (1914–2007) was one of the defining figures of Danish modernism and among the most important furniture designers of the 20th century.

Originally trained as a cabinetmaker, Wegner brought an exceptional understanding of wood, joinery and traditional craftsmanship to modern furniture. Throughout his career he designed hundreds of chairs, continually investigating how structure could be simplified without sacrificing comfort or character.

His furniture rarely relied on decoration. Instead, expression emerged from construction itself: a carefully shaped armrest, an exposed joint, the transition between materials or the precise curve required to support the body.

The GE-673 reflects this philosophy particularly clearly, turning the familiar rocking-chair typology into an architectural composition of wood and suspended leather.

Manufacturer

GETAMA is a Danish furniture manufacturer with roots in Gedsted, Denmark, and an important place in the history of Danish modern furniture.

The company developed a particularly significant relationship with Hans J. Wegner, producing numerous pieces from his extensive body of work. These designs combined Wegner's demanding approach to proportion and craftsmanship with GETAMA's manufacturing expertise.

Original GETAMA production remains closely associated with some of Wegner's most recognisable mid-century furniture and is sought after by collectors of Danish design.

Condition

The beech structure remains in excellent vintage condition, preserving its original transparent lacquer, natural tone and visible grain.

The original cognac leather seating is equally well preserved and carries a beautiful natural patina developed through age and use. Its variation in tone adds depth without compromising the integrity or functionality of the material.

Overall, the rocking chair is presented in excellent vintage condition.
