Object

Superstar is built around suspension. Four sweeping pieces of bent plywood create an open structure, while the leather seat hangs almost independently inside it. The chair does not hold the body in the conventional sense. It lets it settle.

Emerging during the 1970s, the Superstar belongs to the same Scandinavian experiment with suspended seating that produced some of the decade's most memorable lounge chairs. Structure and upholstery are allowed to separate, creating a silhouette that feels unusually light despite its generous proportions. Dark bentwood and black leather give this example an almost monochromatic presence, somewhere between a hammock, a piece of equipment and a small piece of architecture made for doing absolutely nothing.

Designer

Sigurd Ressell (1920–2010) trained in carpentry at the Norwegian National Academy of Craft and Art Industry before developing a career that moved between interiors, craftsmanship and industrial furniture design. His early work remained rooted in Scandinavian woodworking, but by the 1960s he had become increasingly interested in tension, suspension and new ways of allowing furniture to respond to the body.

That experimentation ultimately became central to Ressell's design language. Rather than placing upholstery conventionally onto a rigid structure, he explored ways of letting the seat exist almost independently within it. The result was furniture with an unusual sense of movement and freedom, ideas that became closely associated with Scandinavian lounge seating of the 1970s.

Manufacturer

Trygg Møbler was a Danish furniture manufacturer active during the flourishing Scandinavian furniture industry of the 1970s. The company became particularly associated with the Superstar Chair, translating the era's fascination with bentwood and suspended seating into a distinctly relaxed lounge chair.

Its construction belongs unmistakably to the period: laminated wood used not simply as structure but as a continuous sculptural line, paired with leather that hangs within rather than conceals the frame. The result is an object whose construction remains visible from almost every angle.

Condition

The bent plywood frame remains fully original and is preserved in excellent vintage condition, retaining its deep brown finish and natural character. The black leather cushions have been refreshed, restoring their softness and tactile quality while remaining faithful to the original appearance of the chair. Subtle traces of age and previous use may remain as part of its authentic vintage character.
