Object

The Safari Chair looks as though it could be taken apart and carried somewhere else at any moment. Slender pieces of ash meet through visible connections, while leather hangs between them to create the seat, back and arms. Nothing is concealed. The construction is the chair.

Klint designed Safari in 1933 after encountering British campaign furniture made to travel lightly through changing landscapes. He took that utilitarian idea and refined it until almost nothing remained but proportion, material and structure. The result feels both temporary and permanent — a chair that can be dismantled with ease, yet has survived almost a century without losing its relevance. As a pair, they bring a quiet sense of expedition into the room.

Designer

Kaare Klint (1888–1954) believed that modern furniture did not need to begin by forgetting everything that came before it. Instead, he studied historical furniture, human proportions and patterns of everyday life, searching for forms that had already proved themselves over generations.

From those observations came a remarkably disciplined kind of modernism. Klint removed ornament, refined dimensions and allowed construction and natural materials to become the decoration. As a teacher and designer, his thinking shaped an entire generation of Danish furniture makers, earning him a place at the beginning of what would become Danish Modern.

Manufacturer

Rud. Rasmussen was founded in Copenhagen in 1869 and became one of the great cabinetmaking workshops of Danish furniture history. Its relationship with Kaare Klint brought together his rigorous ideas and a tradition of extraordinarily precise craftsmanship.

Inside the workshop, Klint's drawings became objects made from wood, leather and carefully resolved connections. The Safari Chair is one of the clearest expressions of that collaboration — deliberately simple furniture whose apparent effortlessness depends on an exceptional understanding of material and construction.

Condition

The original ash wood frames have been lightly refinished in a warm, light brown tone, while the black leather seating has been refreshed. Both chairs are preserved in excellent, nearly new vintage condition. As with any authentic vintage pieces, subtle traces of age and previous use may be present, adding to their history and individual character.
