Object

The Karuselli is one of those rare chairs that seems to belong simultaneously to its own decade and to a future that never quite arrived.

Designed by Yrjö Kukkapuro in 1964, its form grew from an unusually direct study of the human body. Rather than beginning with the conventional idea of a chair, Kukkapuro explored how a seated body naturally rests, moves and distributes its weight. The resulting fiberglass shell wraps around the sitter almost like a second architecture, while the generously upholstered leather interior softens its sculptural form.

Its white shell, deep black leather and chromed swivel base create an unmistakable silhouette. Organic yet mechanical, luxurious yet experimental, the Karuselli captures the optimism of the 1960s at the moment Scandinavian modernism began looking beyond wood and towards the possibilities of new industrial materials.

More than sixty years later, it still looks radical.

Designer

Yrjö Kukkapuro (1933–2025) was one of Finland’s most important modern furniture designers and a pioneer in ergonomic seating.

Educated at the Institute of Industrial Arts in Helsinki, Kukkapuro approached furniture through the relationship between anatomy, engineering and form. His experiments with fiberglass allowed him to move beyond the geometric limitations of traditional furniture construction and create objects shaped much more directly around the human body.

The Karuselli became the defining expression of this philosophy. Developed through years of experimentation and introduced during the 1960s, it transformed ergonomic research into an object of extraordinary visual presence. The chair went on to become an internationally recognised Finnish design icon and entered major museum and design collections.

Manufacturer

Avarte became closely associated with Yrjö Kukkapuro and the production of his furniture in Finland.

The company produced many of Kukkapuro’s best-known designs, preserving the combination of industrial manufacturing, ergonomic research and craftsmanship central to his work. The Karuselli remains the most recognisable expression of that collaboration.

Condition

The chair remains in great vintage condition and is structurally sound.

The black leather upholstery and white fiberglass shell display minor traces of age and use, while the chromed base retains its distinctive architectural presence. These subtle signs of wear form part of the chair’s vintage character without compromising its function or visual impact.
