Object

Jetson looks like the moment Scandinavian modernism discovered the future. A thin shell of black leather floats inside polished steel, balanced above a swivel base with almost nothing visually connecting the body to the floor. It is recognisably a lounge chair, but one imagined for a different kind of life.

Mathsson designed Jetson in 1969, after decades spent studying how furniture could follow the human body. By then, bent wood had given way to steel, and traditional craftsmanship was meeting the optimism of the Space Age. Even the name looked forward. In black leather and mirror-like chrome, these two chairs still carry that strange confidence of the late 1960s, when tomorrow seemed lighter, faster and perhaps a little more glamorous.

Designer

Bruno Mathsson (1907–1988) was born into a family of cabinetmakers in the small Swedish town of Värnamo. Wood was already part of his world. What interested him was how far furniture could move beyond the conventions he had inherited.

For decades he studied the human body at rest, experimenting first with laminated wood, canvas and webbing before turning increasingly toward steel and leather. The materials changed, but the question remained the same: how little chair was necessary to support a person comfortably? Jetson became one of his most radical answers, translating a lifetime of ergonomic thinking into the technological language of the late 1960s.

Manufacturer

DUX began in Malmö in 1926 with comfort at the centre of its thinking. As Scandinavian design evolved, the company became a natural partner for designers interested not only in how furniture looked, but in how engineering could change the experience of sitting.

Its collaboration with Bruno Mathsson brought together two remarkably compatible worlds. Mathsson supplied decades of experimentation with the human body, while DUX provided the technical precision to turn those ideas into production. Jetson emerged from that relationship as something distinctly Swedish yet unmistakably international, a chair designed for the modern home as it was imagined at the edge of the 1970s.

Condition

The original chrome-plated steel structures are beautifully preserved and have been carefully polished to retain their mirror finish. The black leather upholstery has been refreshed while remaining faithful to the original character of the design. Both lounge chairs are preserved in excellent vintage condition, with subtle traces of age and previous use possible as part of their history.
