Object

The Alias Chair is Giandomenico Belotti's exercise in reducing a chair to little more than line, surface and proportion.

Designed at the beginning of his collaboration with Alias in 1979, the chair reflects a distinctly Italian approach to industrial minimalism. A slender tubular steel structure establishes the geometry, while the black leather seat and backrest are integrated with almost no visual interruption.

There is very little material here, and that restraint is precisely what gives the chair its presence. The chrome frame appears almost like a continuous line drawn around the body, while the dark leather creates two simple planes within it. Structure and seating remain visually separate but perfectly balanced.

Unlike much of the softer Scandinavian furniture of the preceding decades, the Alias Chair belongs to a more architectural generation of European design. Its character comes from precision, repetition and industrial materials rather than sculptural mass or decoration.

As a set of four, the chairs become particularly effective. Repeated chrome lines create a graphic rhythm around a table, while their open construction keeps the composition remarkably light.

Designer

Giandomenico Belotti (1922–2004) was an Italian architect and designer whose work crossed architecture, urban planning, restoration, research and industrial design.

Educated in architecture in Venice, Belotti approached furniture with an architect's interest in structure, proportion and economy of means.

His collaboration with Alias began in 1979 and produced the chair that became closely associated with both his name and the emerging identity of the company. Its radical simplicity reflected a broader shift in Italian furniture toward increasingly lightweight, technically precise and industrial forms.

Belotti's work for Alias remains a particularly clear example of how minimal construction can create a strong and enduring visual identity.

Manufacturer

Alias was founded in Italy in 1979 and quickly established itself through an experimental approach to materials, technology and lightweight furniture.

Rather than relying on traditional furniture typologies, the company developed a language closely connected to architecture and industrial production. Steel, aluminium and other technically demanding materials became central to an aesthetic defined by precision and structural clarity.

Giandomenico Belotti's early collaboration with Alias helped establish this identity. His stripped-back seating designs became closely connected with the company's philosophy and remain among the most recognisable expressions of its minimalist approach.

Condition

All four chairs remain in excellent original vintage condition.

The chromed tubular steel structures are beautifully preserved, retaining their reflective finish with only light traces of age and use.

The original black leather seats and backrests are equally well preserved and have developed a subtle natural patina consistent with their vintage character.

Overall, the set presents exceptionally well while retaining its original materials and finish.
