Object

There is something distinctly architectural about the Azuolas Rocking Chair. Two sweeping wooden rockers define its silhouette, while the upholstered seat and backrest are suspended within a remarkably simple structure. Nothing feels unnecessary.

Created as part of Valerija Ema Cukermaniene’s Azuolas furniture collection, the chair belongs to a lesser-known chapter of European modernism. Lithuanian designers worked within the constraints of Soviet industry while absorbing ideas from Nordic modernism and the Baltic craft tradition. The result here feels familiar yet unmistakably its own. Finished in matt black with light grey upholstery, the chair becomes particularly graphic, almost like a drawing reduced to a few confident lines.

Designer

Valerija Ema Cukermaniene was a Lithuanian architect and furniture designer whose work contributed to the development of Lithuanian modernism during the second half of the 20th century.

Alongside architecture, she designed furniture for significant public interiors, including government and cultural institutions in Vilnius. Her Azuolas collection included an armchair, sofa, rocking chair, convertible armchair and coffee table, forming a complete domestic vocabulary around straightforward construction, generous proportions and the expressive potential of wood.

The rocking chair is perhaps one of the collection's most sculptural pieces. Its character comes almost entirely from structure and proportion rather than ornament.

Manufacturer

Vilniaus Baldų Kombinatas was one of Lithuania's important furniture manufacturers during the Soviet period, producing furniture for both domestic interiors and major public projects.

Its history reaches back to the late 19th century, with the company eventually developing into the contemporary Lithuanian manufacturer Vilniaus Baldai. Pieces produced during the modernist decades remain an interesting record of Lithuania's industrial design culture, particularly when connected to documented architects and designers such as Cukermanienė.

Condition

The chair has been carefully restored while retaining its original structure. The wooden frame has been polished and refinished in matt black, giving the sculptural profile greater visual clarity. The seat and backrest have been completely reupholstered in new light grey fabric.

The chair is presented in excellent restored vintage condition.
