Object

Corona breaks the body into pieces. Four upholstered forms appear to float one above another, following the spine without ever becoming a conventional backrest. Beneath them, a slender steel structure bends around the chair like an orbit. There is almost nothing connecting the two visually.

Poul M. Volther developed the idea in the early 1960s, reportedly finding inspiration in the structure of the human ribcage and spine. What emerged was unusually futuristic for Danish furniture of the period. Where Scandinavian modernism often disappeared quietly into the home, Corona demanded to be looked at. In cognac leather and polished steel, this pair still feels like an optimistic vision of a future imagined more than sixty years ago.

Designer

Poul M. Volther (1923–2001) belonged to the generation of Danish designers for whom experimentation remained inseparable from craftsmanship. Trained as a cabinetmaker before studying at the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts, he inherited the functional discipline of Danish modernism but was never limited by its familiar forms.

His work explored how furniture could respond more directly to the human body. Corona became the most radical expression of that thinking. Rather than designing another upholstered shell, Volther separated the areas of support and allowed space to exist between them. The body itself became part of the composition.

Manufacturer

Erik Jørgensen Møbelfabrik began in Svendborg in 1954 as the workshop of master upholsterer Erik Jørgensen. Its world was built around upholstery, comfort and the belief that technically difficult furniture could still possess the precision and longevity associated with traditional Danish craftsmanship.

That expertise made the company a natural partner for Corona. Volther's unusual sequence of individually upholstered elements demanded considerable technical control, transforming what could have remained a sculptural experiment into furniture capable of being lived with.

Condition

The chromed steel frames and cognac leather upholstery remain beautifully preserved in excellent vintage condition. The leather retains its warmth and tactile character, while the metal structures remain clean and visually striking. Only very subtle traces of age and previous use may be present, consistent with carefully preserved authentic vintage furniture.
