Object

Pernilla seems to have been drawn in a single movement. From the floor, the beech rises, bends and carries the body with almost nothing interrupting its path. Canvas hangs between the structure rather than covering it. Everything is visible. Nothing needs to pretend.

Mathsson was not interested in teaching people how to sit properly. He wanted the chair to follow the body instead. The result feels strangely liberated, somewhere between a chair, a hammock and a piece of architecture. More than half a century later, Pernilla still looks like an idea of how we might live.

Designer

Bruno Mathsson (1907–1988) was born into a family of cabinetmakers in the small Swedish town of Värnamo. Wood was already part of his world. What interested him was how far it could be pushed.

He became almost obsessive about the simple act of sitting, studying bodies at rest and questioning the upright chair that generations had accepted without much thought. Bent wood, canvas and webbing became his vocabulary. From them came furniture that feels remarkably free, shaped less by convention than by gravity, movement and the human body itself.

Manufacturer

DUX began in Malmö in 1926, at a moment when Scandinavian furniture was quietly being reinvented. Its belief in comfort, craftsmanship and unconventional ideas made it a natural home for Bruno Mathsson. Chairs conceived in Sweden travelled into homes around the world, carrying with them a new idea of what life could feel like.

Condition

The canvas seating, cushion, and wooden frame remain original and are preserved in excellent vintage condition. As with any authentic vintage piece, subtle traces of age and previous use may be present, adding to the history and individual character of the chair.
