Object

The Spanish Chair feels less designed than assembled from a few ancient ideas. Four heavy pieces of oak create the structure. Thick leather is stretched between them. Wide armrests become surfaces of their own. Nothing is hidden, and almost nothing is added.

Mogensen designed the chair in 1958 after travelling through Spain, where he encountered traditional chairs built from solid wood and saddle leather. He brought the idea home and removed everything unnecessary. What remained was something almost architectural, a chair that asks for space around it and becomes better as its materials begin to carry the life lived around them.

Designer

Børge Mogensen (1914–1972) belonged to the generation that turned Danish furniture into an international language, but his work rarely chased novelty. He was interested in ordinary life and in making furniture simple enough, strong enough and comfortable enough to remain part of it for decades.

Trained as a cabinetmaker before studying under Kaare Klint, Mogensen looked constantly to vernacular furniture, old tools and anonymous objects whose forms had been refined through use rather than fashion. The Spanish Chair captures that thinking beautifully. An old Mediterranean archetype became something unmistakably Danish without losing the roughness and honesty that made the original compelling.

Manufacturer

Fredericia Stolefabrik was founded in the Danish town of Fredericia in 1911. Its defining chapter began with Børge Mogensen, whose close relationship with the company produced furniture built around unusually straightforward ideas: excellent materials, precise craftsmanship and forms intended to survive generations rather than seasons.

The Spanish Chair became one of the clearest expressions of that relationship. More than sixty years after its creation, Fredericia continues to produce the design, allowing Mogensen's uncompromising combination of oak and saddle leather to remain part of contemporary interiors.

Condition

The original solid oak frame has been carefully refinished in a light natural tone, preserving the grain and character of the wood. The black saddle leather seating and backrest have been refreshed, restoring their strength and tactile quality while remaining faithful to the original design. The chair is preserved in excellent vintage condition.
