Object

The Siesta is an exercise in how little structure a comfortable chair actually needs.

Designed by Ingmar Relling in 1965, its construction is remarkably direct. A pair of curved laminated wooden elements creates the frame, while a flexible support suspends the leather seating within it. Instead of relying on heavy upholstery, comfort comes from tension, movement and the natural flexibility of the materials.

The low-back version distils the idea even further. Its reduced silhouette feels lighter and more architectural, allowing the sweeping plywood frame to become the defining visual element.

In this pair, the warm beige-toned wood contrasts sharply with black leather, giving the chairs a graphic quality while preserving the softness associated with Relling's work. Seen from the side, their construction is almost diagrammatic: frame, suspension, cushion, body.

More than half a century after its introduction, the Siesta still feels remarkably uncomplicated.

Designer

Ingmar Relling (1920–2002) was one of the most important figures in Norwegian modern furniture design.

After working at Rastad & Relling from 1947, he established his own practice in Sykkylven in 1950. His furniture was characterised by material economy, intelligent construction and an understanding that comfort did not require visual heaviness.

The Siesta Chair became the defining work of his career. Designed in 1965, it won first prize in the Norwegian Industry Council for Furniture and Furnishing competition and developed into one of Norway's most internationally recognised furniture designs.

Manufacturer

Westnofa played an important role in bringing Norwegian modern furniture to an international audience.

Established as an export collaboration representing furniture manufacturers from western Norway, Westnofa helped distribute Norwegian designs throughout Europe and overseas during the height of Scandinavian modernism. Ingmar Relling's Siesta became one of the designs most closely associated with its international success.

Condition

Both chairs remain in very good vintage condition.

The black leather upholstery has been carefully refreshed and remains supple and clean. The bent plywood frames retain their vintage character with only subtle traces of age and use, while the supporting fabric has been freshly cleaned.

The chairs remain structurally sound and preserve the material character of the original design.
