Object

Flag Halyard looks almost as though a chair has been drawn in space. A slender steel frame establishes the outline, hundreds of lengths of rope create the surface, and a small leather pillow appears exactly where the body needs softness. There is almost nothing conventional about it, yet the result feels completely natural once you sit down.

Wegner conceived the chair in 1950 while on holiday, reportedly shaping a seat for himself in the sand before translating its contours into steel and rope. It was an extraordinary departure for a designer so closely associated with wood. Here, industrial materials become unexpectedly intimate. Steel carries the body, rope gives beneath it, and the chair seems suspended somewhere between a piece of furniture and a structure built simply for dreaming.

Designer

Hans J. Wegner (1914–2007) began as a cabinetmaker before becoming one of the great chair designers of the 20th century. His understanding of construction was extraordinary, but what made his furniture different was the freedom with which he used it. Tradition became something to explore rather than imitate.

He designed hundreds of chairs, moving effortlessly between ancient furniture archetypes, Danish cabinetmaking and experiments that seemed to belong to another world entirely. Flag Halyard is perhaps one of the clearest examples of that freedom. Wegner abandoned the wood for which he was famous and created comfort from steel and rope instead, proving that his real material was never timber. It was the human body.

Manufacturer

PP Møbler grew from a small Danish joinery workshop founded in 1953 into one of the great custodians of Hans J. Wegner's work. Its relationship with the designer developed through a shared fascination with craftsmanship and furniture that was difficult precisely because nothing about it could be approximate.

Flag Halyard embodies that philosophy in an unusual language. Rather than intricate timber joinery, its character emerges from precisely formed steel and an extraordinary amount of rope woven by hand around the structure. What appears effortless is the result of countless small decisions disappearing into the finished chair.

Condition

The polished stainless steel frame and woven halyard rope remain original and are beautifully preserved in excellent vintage condition. The black leather headrest pillow has been refreshed, restoring its softness while remaining faithful to the original character of the chair. As with any authentic vintage piece, subtle traces of age and previous use may be present, adding to its history and individual character.
