Object

The Flowerpot VP3 is one of Verner Panton's most recognisable experiments with pure geometry, colour and light.

Designed in 1968, the Flowerpot series emerged at the height of Panton's fascination with immersive interiors and the cultural optimism of the late 1960s. Its form is remarkably simple: two opposing hemispheres, one larger than the other, arranged around a central stem. Yet from this elementary geometry Panton created an object with an unmistakable identity.

The VP3 translates the Flowerpot concept into a compact table lamp. The upper hemisphere conceals the light source while the smaller form beneath it reflects and diffuses the illumination, producing a soft atmospheric glow without exposing the bulb directly.

Finished entirely in pink lacquer, this example makes colour an essential part of the object rather than an applied decorative detail. The monochromatic surface emphasises the purity of the silhouette and gives the lamp the playful, almost futuristic character associated with Panton's work.

More than half a century after its introduction, the Flowerpot still feels remarkably immediate. It is simultaneously lighting, sculpture and a small piece of 1960s optimism.

Designer

Verner Panton (1926–1998) was one of the most radical and influential Danish designers of the 20th century.

After studying architecture at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Panton worked briefly in Arne Jacobsen's studio before establishing his own practice. While many of his Scandinavian contemporaries concentrated on natural materials and restrained palettes, Panton moved decisively toward colour, plastics, metal and experimental manufacturing.

His interiors often treated furniture, lighting, textiles and architecture as parts of a single environment. Saturated colours and repeating geometric forms transformed rooms into immersive compositions rather than collections of individual objects.

The Flowerpot series distils this larger philosophy into an exceptionally simple form. Two hemispheres, one colour and carefully controlled light were enough to create one of the defining lighting designs of the late 1960s.
