Object

The AJ Table Lamp is one of Arne Jacobsen's defining lighting designs and an object inseparable from his architectural vision for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen.

Designed in 1960 as part of the hotel's complete interior, the AJ emerged from Jacobsen's idea of architecture as a total composition. He designed the building, furniture, lighting, textiles and smaller interior elements as parts of one coherent environment, producing designs that would eventually become independent icons.

The lamp is constructed from remarkably few geometric elements. A slender stem rises from a circular base to support the distinctive asymmetrical shade, whose sharply angled profile directs light precisely towards the surface below. The shade can be adjusted, allowing the direction of illumination to change according to use.

Its black exterior makes the silhouette especially graphic, while the white interior of the shade reflects and softens the light. The contrast is both functional and visual: the exterior becomes an architectural object within the room, while the interior is designed around the quality of illumination.

There is almost nothing decorative about the AJ. Its identity comes entirely from proportion, geometry and purpose. More than six decades after its introduction, the lamp still feels remarkably contemporary, a testament to how completely Jacobsen resolved function and form into a single object.

Designer

Arne Jacobsen (1902–1971) was one of Denmark's most influential architects and designers and a central figure in the development of Scandinavian modernism.

Educated at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, Jacobsen approached furniture and objects as extensions of architecture rather than separate disciplines. Buildings, interiors, furniture, lighting and details were frequently developed together.

His work combined the rational principles of international modernism with an unusually sensitive understanding of proportion, material and human use. Designs including the Ant, Series 7, Egg, Swan and AJ lamps demonstrate the remarkable range of this approach.

The SAS Royal Hotel became perhaps the clearest expression of Jacobsen's philosophy. Designed as a complete environment, it allowed him to control everything from the building's monumental exterior to the lamps beside its furniture.

The AJ series emerged directly from this project and remains one of the purest expressions of Jacobsen's architectural approach at the scale of an everyday object.

Manufacturer

Louis Poulsen was founded in Denmark in 1874 and developed into one of the world's most influential architectural lighting manufacturers.

The company's philosophy has long centred on the quality and experience of light itself rather than treating the lamp simply as a decorative object. Collaborations with designers including Poul Henningsen, Arne Jacobsen and Verner Panton produced some of the defining lighting designs of 20th-century Scandinavia.

Louis Poulsen's collaboration with Jacobsen resulted in several lamps for his architectural projects, with the AJ series for the SAS Royal Hotel becoming the most recognisable.

Introduced in 1960, the AJ remains an important part of the Louis Poulsen collection and one of the enduring icons of Danish modern lighting.

Condition

The lamp is presented in excellent vintage condition.

The black lacquered shade and body have been gently refreshed and retain a clean, deep finish, with only minimal traces of age and use.

The white interior reflector is equally well preserved, remaining clean and bright while maintaining its important role in directing and reflecting the light.

Overall, the AJ Table Lamp presents beautifully while preserving the character of a vintage example.

As with all vintage lighting, the electrical components should be inspected by a qualified electrician before use and adapted where necessary to local electrical standards.
