Object

The EA 107 belongs to Charles and Ray Eames' Aluminium Group, one of the most enduring office furniture systems of the 20th century.

Developed in 1958, the collection represented a significant departure from the Eameses' earlier experiments with moulded plywood and fibreglass. Instead of creating a rigid seat shell, they stretched a continuous surface between two aluminium side members, allowing the material itself to provide support.

This simple structural idea gave the chair its remarkably light profile. The polished metal frame defines the architecture while the black mesh appears almost suspended within it, creating a precise balance between transparency, tension and solidity.

The EA 107 is the non-swivel side-chair version of the Aluminium Group, originally conceived for conference and meeting environments. Its compact proportions and restrained geometry allow it to move easily between office, dining and domestic settings.

Designed more than six decades ago, the chair remains strikingly contemporary. Very little is concealed, and almost every visible element performs a structural function.

Designers

Charles Eames (1907–1978) and Ray Eames (1912–1988) were among the most influential designers of the 20th century, working across furniture, architecture, exhibitions, film, photography and graphic communication.

Their practice was driven by experimentation. Rather than treating furniture as an isolated decorative object, the Eameses investigated materials and manufacturing processes to discover new ways of producing comfortable, accessible and visually intelligent objects.

Their experiments moved from moulded plywood to fibreglass, aluminium, wire and other industrial materials. Each development was approached as both a technical and human problem, with construction, ergonomics and mass production considered simultaneously.

The Aluminium Group demonstrates this thinking particularly clearly. A conventional upholstered chair was reduced to two structural aluminium members and a tensioned seating surface, creating a design whose visual elegance emerged directly from the way it was made.

Manufacturer

Vitra is a Swiss furniture manufacturer whose relationship with Charles and Ray Eames has played a central role in the company's history.

Founded by Willi and Erika Fehlbaum, Vitra began producing furniture by Charles and Ray Eames for the European market in 1957. The collaboration introduced some of the most important works of American modernism to European production and established a relationship that continues to define the Vitra collection.

Over the following decades, Vitra expanded its catalogue through collaborations with leading international designers and architects while maintaining the Eames collection as one of its foundations.

This EA 107 was manufactured by Vitra in 2005, decades after the original 1958 design, demonstrating the unusual longevity of a chair conceived for the emerging modern workplace.
