Object

Togo begins where the conventional chair disappears. There are no legs, no wooden frame and no rigid structure hiding beneath the upholstery. Instead, layers of foam fold towards the floor beneath deeply pleated leather, creating something that seems halfway between furniture and a landscape for the body.

Ducaroy designed Togo in 1973, at a moment when new materials were beginning to change what furniture could be. Sitting became lower, rooms became less formal, and the chair itself could finally become soft all the way through. In black leather, those folds take on another life as they age, gathering light, shadow and patina. More than fifty years later, Togo still feels like an invitation to live differently.

Designer

Michel Ducaroy (1925–2009) grew up surrounded by furniture making in Lyon before studying at the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts. But rather than remaining inside the traditions he inherited, he became fascinated by the new materials and industrial possibilities emerging in postwar France.

Foam, quilting and synthetic structures allowed Ducaroy to abandon much of what had previously defined a chair. With Togo, designed in 1973, even the internal frame disappeared. What remained was almost entirely softness — a radical idea transformed into one of the most recognisable silhouettes of 20th-century furniture.

Manufacturer

Ligne Roset grew from a family woodworking business founded in France in the 19th century into one of the country's defining manufacturers of contemporary furniture. By the postwar decades, experimentation had become central to its identity, creating an environment where designers could explore new materials, technologies and ways of living.

Its collaboration with Michel Ducaroy produced Togo in 1973. What began as an unconventional experiment in all-foam seating became one of Ligne Roset's defining objects, travelling into homes around the world and changing the idea of what a lounge chair could be.

Condition

The black leather upholstery remains supple and beautifully preserved, carrying a rich natural patina developed through age and previous use. The foam structure retains its original shape, comfort and integrity. Overall, the lounge chair is preserved in excellent vintage condition. As with any authentic vintage piece, subtle traces of time may be present, adding to its history and individual character.
