Object

The Egyptian Stool feels both ancient and completely modern. Two pairs of slender teak legs cross beneath a suspended piece of leather, creating an object from little more than structure, tension and balance. Folded or open, every part of its construction remains visible.

Wanscher designed the stool in 1957 after looking far beyond the usual boundaries of Scandinavian furniture, towards folding seats made thousands of years earlier in ancient Egypt. He did not simply reproduce the past. He reduced it, refined it and brought it into the modern home. Teak and black leather give the object warmth, while its almost archetypal silhouette makes it feel as though it could belong to no particular century at all.

Designer

Ole Wanscher (1903–1985) belonged to the generation that established Danish furniture as an international language. A student of Kaare Klint, he inherited a fascination with proportion, construction and the long history of furniture, but developed a sensibility that was distinctly his own.

Wanscher travelled through centuries for inspiration. Classical European furniture, Chinese forms and objects from ancient Egypt became starting points rather than rules. He stripped them of ornament and rediscovered their underlying logic, creating pieces that could feel simultaneously archaeological and unmistakably modern. The Egyptian Stool is perhaps the purest expression of that idea.

Manufacturer

PJ Møbler became closely associated with Ole Wanscher's furniture, translating his precise and historically informed designs into beautifully crafted objects. Traditional woodworking, carefully selected materials and an understanding of fine Danish cabinetmaking allowed Wanscher's unusually delicate forms to retain their clarity.

The Egyptian Stool remains one of the most recognisable pieces from this collaboration — an object whose apparent simplicity depends on exact proportions, material quality and craftsmanship.

Condition

The solid teak frame and black leather seat remain original and are preserved in excellent, nearly new vintage condition. The materials show only minimal traces of age and previous use. As with any authentic vintage piece, subtle signs of time may be present, adding to its history and individual character.
