Object

Guldhøj looks almost too elemental to belong to the 20th century. Two pieces of wood cross beneath a suspended leather seat, folding together with a gesture that feels more discovered than designed. There is no decoration and almost no excess material. Its beauty comes entirely from structure.

And in a way, the stool really does belong to another time. Hundevad based the design on an ancient Danish folding stool discovered in a Bronze Age burial mound at Guldhøj. Reimagined in the 1950s, the archaeological object became something quietly modern. Thousands of years collapse into a few pieces of wood and leather, turning one of Denmark's oldest furniture forms into one of its most timeless.

Designer

Poul Hundevad (1917–2011) was trained as a cabinetmaker in Denmark, where craftsmanship was understood not simply as a way of making furniture, but as a way of thinking about it. His work belongs to the golden age of Danish modernism, yet often looked further back for its ideas.

The Guldhøj Stool is perhaps the clearest expression of that instinct. Rather than inventing an entirely new form, Hundevad returned to an ancient Danish object and recognised something unexpectedly contemporary within it. Through careful proportions, honest materials and extraordinary restraint, history became modern design.

Manufacturer

Hundevad & Co. grew around Poul Hundevad's designs during one of the most fertile periods of Danish furniture making. Its production was rooted in traditional cabinetmaking, precision and a respect for natural materials, allowing even remarkably simple pieces to feel considered down to their smallest details.

The Guldhøj Stool became one of the workshop's defining objects, bringing an ancient Danish form into modern homes and demonstrating how little was needed to create something enduring.

Condition

The solid wooden frame and black leather seat remain original and are preserved in excellent, nearly new vintage condition. The materials show only minimal traces of age and previous use. As with any authentic vintage piece, subtle signs of time may be present, adding to its history and individual character.
