Object

The Series 7 is Arne Jacobsen's most widely recognised chair and one of the defining objects of postwar Danish design.

Designed in 1955 for Fritz Hansen, Model 3107 developed from Jacobsen's earlier experiments with moulded plywood into an extraordinarily economical piece of furniture. The seat and back are resolved as a single continuous shell, narrowing dramatically at the waist before opening again around the body.

This sculpted plywood shell is fundamental to the chair's character. Thin, lightweight and gently flexible, it provides comfort through its geometry rather than through conventional furniture construction. Four slender tubular steel legs support the shell with minimal visual interruption, making the chair appear almost weightless.

In these examples, the moulded shells are upholstered in black leather and paired with polished chrome bases. The leather gives Jacobsen's otherwise extremely precise silhouette a richer and more tactile presence, while the reflective steel maintains the visual lightness of the original design.

Presented as a set of four, the repeated hourglass profiles create a particularly strong rhythm around a dining table. Individually the Series 7 is almost diagrammatically simple. As a group, its curves, narrow waists and slender legs become an architectural composition of their own.

Designer

Arne Jacobsen (1902–1971) was one of Denmark's most influential architects and designers and a central figure in the development of Scandinavian modernism.

Educated at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, Jacobsen approached furniture and objects as extensions of architecture rather than separate disciplines. Buildings, interiors, furniture, lighting and smaller details were frequently developed as parts of one complete environment.

His furniture often emerged from experiments with new manufacturing techniques. During the early 1950s, Jacobsen worked with Fritz Hansen to explore the possibilities of pressure-moulded plywood, initially producing the three-legged Ant Chair in 1952.

The Series 7 followed in 1955. By refining the moulded shell and introducing a four-legged base, Jacobsen created a chair that could function across dining rooms, offices, institutions and public interiors while retaining an unmistakable identity.

The design became the most commercially successful chair associated with Jacobsen and one of the most recognisable silhouettes in modern furniture history.

Manufacturer

Fritz Hansen was founded in Denmark in 1872 and became one of the most important manufacturers in the development of Scandinavian furniture.

The company's willingness to experiment with materials and industrial production made its collaboration with Arne Jacobsen particularly significant. Together they developed new methods for shaping laminated plywood into thin, organically curved furniture shells.

This experimentation resulted first in the Ant Chair and subsequently in the Series 7, whose combination of efficient production, structural lightness and sculptural form made it exceptionally adaptable.

The Series 7 became one of Fritz Hansen's defining designs and remains closely associated with both the manufacturer and the broader history of Danish Modern furniture.

Condition

The set is presented in excellent vintage condition.

The moulded plywood shells are beautifully preserved and upholstered in black leather, which retains a refined natural patina consistent with age and use.

The chrome-plated tubular steel bases remain clean, structurally sound and well preserved, complementing the darker upholstered shells.

Overall, all four chairs present beautifully together and retain the authentic material character expected from vintage examples.
