It was an extraordinary departure for a designer so closely associated with wood. Here, industrial materials become unexpectedly intimate. Wegner (1914–2007) began as a cabinetmaker before becoming one of the great chair designers of the 20th century. Tradition became something to explore rather than imitate.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHe designed hundreds of chairs, moving effortlessly between ancient furniture archetypes, Danish cabinetmaking and experiments that seemed to belong to another world entirely. Flag Halyard is perhaps one of the clearest examples of that freedom. Wegner abandoned the wood for which he was famous and created comfort from steel and rope instead, proving that his real material was never timber. Wegner's work. Rather than intricate timber joinery, its character emerges from precisely formed steel and an extraordinary amount of rope woven by hand around the structure.
